It ain’t over until the fat lady sings. And for St. Catharine the song was sweet music as the Patriots mounted a huge comeback to defeat the visiting RedStorm from Rio Grande 3-2 in Mid-South Conference volleyball action Friday night.
After losing the first two sets by identical scores of 25-19, the Patriots gained the momentum in winning set three 25-17. They took set four 25-18 and won the decisive fifth set 15-11.
The fifth set was tied 10-10 but the Patriots scored five of the next six points to win the match. Shauna Stone started the run with two kills and Porsha Ellison added a kill to give the Patriots a 13-10 advantage. The RedStorm cut the lead to 15-11 but Ellison got another kill and the Patriots closed the match with a block by Stone.
The Patriots improved their overall record to 17-4 and their conference mark to 2-2. Rio Grande fell to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
They return to the court quickly with a home match Saturday against Shawnee State starting at 2:00.
