Krista Russell, in her first start since an injury sent her to the sidelines against Ohio Mid-Western, recorded a hat trick in the first half to lead the St. Catharine Patriots over Midway 8-0 yesterday. Russell's three goals marked the sixth time in her collegiate career that she has recorded a hat trick.
SC had a rocky start to the game when the Eagles threatened the Patriot goal for the first five minutes. Patriot Goalkeeper Lindsey Vinson made a huge save 3 minutes in to hold the score at 0-0. Then, in the seventh minute, Paola Martinez scored a goal on a counter-attack to give St. Catharine the lead. Martinez added a second goal and assisted on another in the next 10 minutes to extend the lead. Goals by Porshia Clark and Senior Captain Emily Caras put St. Catharine on top 7-0 at the half.
The second half saw the Eagles from Midway make a strong early push before the Patriots took over. St. Catharine peppered the Midway goalkeeper with shots until Chelsey Landrum notched her first collegiate goal with 18 minutes remaining in the game to cap off the scoring and finish off the 8-0 victory.
The win puts the Patriots at 4-5 on the season after a rough 1-3 start. The Lady Patriots Reserve Squad will be in action on Tuesday, October 4th at Centre College at 8pm and at home on Thursday, October 6th at 7pm versus Lindsey Wilson College.
