The Lady Pats opened their fall season at NCAA Div. II Bellarmine University, with a double header on Saturday afternoon. SCC came out swinging to end the day with a split against the Lady Knights, falling 7-6 in game one and rebounding with a 5-2 win in game two.
In game one, Bellarmine got on the board first with a triple and a squeeze play in the bottom of the second but were quickly shut down by senior lefty, Ashley Cardenas (Santa Ana, CA), who took the start on the mound for St. Catharine. In the fourth for SCC, a double by Hagan Goldey (Lancaster, KY) and a two-run homerun by freshman, Krystal Cammuse (Frankfort, KY), rallied the Lady Pats to take the lead 4-2. The match up became an offensive battle as both teams put up four runs in the fourth inning. St. Catharine pushed two more runs across the plate in the fifth and sixth but it was not enough to take the win.
Unlike the first game, SCC jumped on the board quickly scoring all five of their runs in the first three innings of game two. Pitcher, Megan Beecham (Louisville, KY), was able to shut down the Lady Knights allowing just five hits through the fifth. Bellarmine showed up on the board in the bottom of the sixth scoring one run on three hits. The Lady Knights began waking their bats up in the bottom of the seventh with three hits to start out the inning. With just one out and the tying run at the plate, SCC brought in pitcher/infielder Krystal Cammuse who sealed the game for the Lady Pats striking out the next two batters.
On the day, Kacie Prather (Lancaster, KY), went 5 for 8 with three doubles, Erika Adwell (Louisville, KY) and Goldey went 4 for 8, Chelcie Rein (Louisville, KY) and Cammuse both finished the day with homeruns.
Bellarmine University finished last year's season with a 27-17 record and was ranked No. 9 in the Midwest Region. SCC will be back in action traveling to Centre College Oct. 8 for a Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament. First game is scheduled for 10 a.m.
