It only took one glance at the statistics to see how dominant the St. Catharine College defense was Tuesday against Florida Memorial University in Miami. The Patriots held the Lions to just three field goals in the first half as they posted a 38-16 lead en route to an 82-48 victory.
For the game Florida Memorial (3-6) made only 12 field goals as they were held to 27 percent shooting by the Patriots who improved to 12-3. Couple the poor shooting with 31 Lions’ turnovers and you have the recipe for a rout.
And that is what happened as the Patriots never trailed in the game. After taking the 22 point halftime lead the Patriots quickly built the cushion to 32 points and they coasted from there.
Five players scored in double figures in the St. Catharine College balanced attack led by Carol Ruiz-Lopez who had 15 points. Machera Calhoun and Reilly Poirier each had 11 while Kasei Evans and Rianne Hofstraat scored 10 apiece. Hofstraat also added a team high six assists, six rebounds and two steals to her stats line.
On Wednesday the Patriots travel north, slightly, where they will play Northwood University in West Palm Beach.
