The St. Catharine College women played excellent basketball Saturday at Mid-South Conference rival Rio Grande - for one half. But, after taking a 39-24 lead into the locker room, the Patriots saw the RedStorm rally for a 74-68 victory.
The two halves were different in every respect for Lena Bramblett’s team that fell to 18-7 overall and 4-7 in conference play. After shooting 50 percent in the first half they made only 30 percent in the second half. The Patriots were 67 percent (6-9) from the foul line before the intermission but just 2-9 in the second half.
Meanwhile, the RedStorm (16-8, 5-5) turned things around in just the opposite way. They shot 33 percent in the first half but 54 percent in the second 20 minutes. They were 1-6 from behind the arc in the first period but shot 50 percent (3-6) after halftime. Rio was 17-22 from the foul line in the second half after making 7 of 12 in the first half.
The teams each collected 25 rebounds and each had trouble controlling the ball, St. Catharine with 26 turnovers and Rio with 25.
Rianne Hofstraat led the Patriots with 15 points that included three 3-point goals in seven attempts. Reilly Poirier had 13 points and Courtney Milam 11.
The Patriots are at home for the next two conference games. Thursday they welcome UVA-Wise to Lourdes Hall for a 6:00 game and Saturday Pikeville visits for a 2:00 tip-off.
