The St. Catharine College softball team allowed only three earned runs in two games Tuesday at Mid-South Conference rival Lindsey Wilson College. But that was enough for the pitching-rich Blue Raiders who swept Holly Smith’s team by scores of 7-2 and 2-0.
“We didn’t play that badly overall,” said Smith whose team fell to 7-9 overall and 0-4 in the conference. “We made a couple critical errors and just didn’t hit the ball.”
The pitching staff of Lindsey Wilson (17-2, 4-0) held the Patriots to a total of three hits in the two games. Jordan Hood (five innings) and Kristina Krupinski (two innings) combined on a two-hitter in the opener, a double by Kasie Prather and a single by Taylor Steff, and Cara Law allowed only a single by Taylor Eastridge in the nightcap.
The Patriots had their own stellar pitching performance by Amber Matteoli in the second game. The senior right hander gave up two runs in the first inning, both unearned, but tossed shutout ball the rest of the way. She walked three and struck out one in the five-hit outing.
The Patriots are back in conference action Saturday when they host Georgetown College in a twin bill starting at 1:00.
