Gary Canter comes to St. Catharine College after a very successful career as a Kentucky High School Wrestling Coach. He started the wrestling program at LaRue County High School in 1990-91 and remained the Head Coach there for 23 years, retiring after the 2012-13 season. During his tenure as coach at LaRue County his teams amassed a total of 476 wins while suffering only 93 defeats. He coached his teams to Five State Dual Championship titles (99), (01), (06), (07) and (11), his teams also had eight other top four State Duals finishes. 

While under his direction from 1998-2013 the Hawks never finished outside of the top ten in the KHSAA individual tourney and finished in the top five, 11 of those years. His teams also captured three KYWCA Class “A” State Tournament Championships (01), (02), and (05) and also finished as Class “A” runner-up nine times.

Canter has coached 10 state champions and 84 state medalists. He was named as the 2000 National High School “Coach of the Year” Runner-Up by Wrestling USA magazine. Canter taught Biology at LaRue County High School for 27 years and is presently serving as the NWCA State Representative for Kentucky.

He attended high school at Ashtabula Edgewood (Ohio). He then attended Hocking College for two years before transferring to Edinboro University where he wrestled and received his bachelor’s degree in Biology, before pursuing his Degree in Secondary Education. He received his Master's Degree in Secondary Science Education from Western Kentucky University. 

He is presently married, to his wife of 30 years, D.J. (Teacher, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School). They have two children, both presently attending college; Hannah (Medical School, University of Louisville) and Caleb (Mechanical Engineering, University of Kentucky).
