Blake Jones brings a wealth of experience to St. Catharine as he directs the track and cross country programs. Jones was with the Shawnee State cross country program for 10 years, four as a runner and six as an assistant coach. Jones has aided Shawnee head coach Eric Putnam in taking a fledgling varsity program, one that started just 15 years ago, to one of national prominence.

“Blake knows what it takes, both as a runner and a coach, to take a young program and build it to be competitive nationally,” said Doig. “Plus, his own running experience will serve him well as head coach.”

Last fall, in his first marathon, Jones finished 16th overall in Columbus with a time of 2:39:15. That qualified him for the prestigious Boston Marathon this year where he finished 94th out of nearly 23,000 runners with a time of 2:32:02. He recently broke the 15 minute mark in a 5K race.

Jones, a native of Georgetown, Ohio, sees St. Catharine as an ideal place to build a quality track and cross country program. “I know from talking to Mike (Doig) that St. Catharine has a willingness to get better and will do what it takes to get kids there.”

Jones feels he already has a head start on getting kids to the Patriot program. “I already have a list of recruits to start calling,” he said. “Recruiting in southern Ohio is good since it is one of the top areas in the nation for running. And I know that St. Catharine will be a great place for these kids to go to school.”

Blake lives in Springfield with his Siberian Husky named Trak.
