Tennis Takes Indiana Southeast to the WireApril 25, 2014
In their last tune up before conference tournament play the St. Catharine Patriots’ tennis team took on the Grenadiers of Indiana University Southeast.
The St. Catharine Patriots came into Wednesday’s contest with the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers knowing that they were going to have to face off against the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Undeterred, the Patriots took to the courts for the final time at home to square off against a talented Indiana Southeast squad.
In number one doubles the Patriots shined, as Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo and Andrea Jacomini ran away late to defeat the combo of Wallace and James 8-3. However, the Patriots did not fare as well with their number two and three combos. In number two doubles the pair of Felipe Barrientos and Tyler Glover stayed neck and neck with the Southeast combo of Martin and Mills for the entire match until the Grenadiers lifted a ball just out of reach to defeat the Patriots 8-6 in the longest match of the day. “Tyler and Felipe did a great job competing” said Head Coach Jim Coomer. “With a little more maturity we will win close matches like those.”
Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, the Patriots were set for a comeback when Andre Jacomini led the Patriots in number one single defeating Wallace 6-4, 6-4. “Andre has been a consistently good player for us all year” said Coomer. “He has really stepped up with the absence of Ethan Rowton.” The Patriots continued their scoring torrent when Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo defeated James in number two singles 6-3, 6-4 and Felipe Barrientos defeated Burke 6-1, 6-1 in dominating fashion to put the Patriots up 3-2.
With only one more victory needed to seal the win, Tyler Glover took Batliner to the wire in the most competitive match of the day. After dropping set one 7-5, Glover roared back pounding the ball just inside the lines to take set two 7-5. In the decisive third set, Glover and Batliner stayed neck and neck until Batliner was able to fend off the offensive attack from Glover to win 10-7, giving the Grenadiers the 5-4 victory.
The Patriots will do battle with the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders Thursday in the first round of Mid-South Conference play at Scott County High School in Georgetown, Kentucky.
