Men's Tennis sweeps Centre, 9-0March 23, 2015
The Patriot men’s tennis team is now off to a 2-0 start on the spring season after they defeated Centre College 9-0. The Patriots managed to sweep the doubles 3-0, then in singles action the Patriots took all six winning 6-0.
Luis Roman (Spain) and Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo (Spain) got the action started when they won in No. 1 doubles action 8-6. Alex Morilla (Spain) and Gonzalo Andres Martinez (Spain) would follow that up with an 8-3 win in No. 2 doubles action. Then in No. 3 doubles action, Felipe and Sebastian Barrientos picked up a 8-1 to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Roman put away Trey Williamson in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Alex Morilla clinched the match for the Patriots when he picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 2 singles. Martinez picked up a win in straight sets in No. 3 singles, only dropping one game in two sets. Kerkoc-Portillo picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win in No. 4 singles to give the Patriots a commanding 7-0 lead heading into the final two singles matches. Felipe Barrientos (Columbia) picked up a win at No. 5 singles, while only dropping one game in two sets. Sebastian Barrientos (Colombia) finished off the Colonels in No. 6 singles with a win in straight sets.
“This was a great match for our guys. It’s the first time we’ve ever swept all the singles and doubles and it’ll give us some confidence heading into conference play,” stated head coach Jim Coomer.
They open Mid-South Conference play on Wednesday when they host Cumberland University at 2 p.m. ET. Then on Saturday they host MSC Campbellsville.
