Tennis falls to the Bulldogs 6-3

After winning their first two matches of the spring season, Jim Coomer’s squad suffered their first defeat of the spring over the weekend at the hands of Union (Ky.).

The Patriots faced an early 2-0 deficit early after dropping both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by the score of 8-3. Things would change for the Patriots in the No. 3 doubles when the Barrientos brothers took the court. Felipe and Sebastian Barrientos picked up the lone win for the Patriots in doubles action. The match would go to a tiebreaker after they battled to a 7-7 tie. The Barrientos brothers would pull out the 8-7 win after they won the tiebreaker 9-7.

Things wouldn’t get much better the singles action. Luis Roman (Spain) lost in straight sets to Ignacio Tejerina in No. 1 singles. Alex Morilla (Spain) fell in No. 2 singles action to Borna Bartolovic, 6-0, 6-2. Gonzalo Andres Martinez (Spain) picked up a hard fought win against Egil Brudvik in No. 3 singles. Martinez won the first set 6-2, but lost the second set 4-6, the match would then go to a tiebreaker where Martinez took control winning 10-4. The win cut the deficit to 4-2 heading into the final three singles.

The Bulldogs would clinch the match when Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo (Spain) fell to Tiago Gil in No. 4 singles action. Felipe Barrientos (Columbia) lost a hard fought match to Adrian Frutos in No. 5 singles. Sebastian Barrientos (Columbia) picked up the only other win for the Patriots in No. 6 singles action when he beat Ethan Wright in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

“Our guys came out a little flat today and that’s something we are going to have to learn from,” stated head coach Jim Coomer. “They are going to have to learn to bring it every day or they might get beat,” continued Coomer. Coomer also noted, “I am proud of Gonzalo and Sebastian for the way they fought in their singles matches.”

The tennis team will return to action today when they host Cumberland University. Then on Friday they host Campbellsville University at 3 p.m. ET.
