Bat Pats eliminated on Day Two of MSC TournamentMay 7, 2016
Bowling Green, Ky. -- The St. Catharine baseball team was able to win one elimination game, but couldn’t win two as they were eliminated from the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament at Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green, Ky.
In their first game of the day the Patriots (35-22) defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 7-4 to advance to the nightcap against Lindsey Wilson (Ky.). The Blue Raiders ended the Patriots’ run with a 12-3 win in the on Saturday night.
Game 1: St. Catharine 7, Cumberland 4
The Patriots fell behind the Phoenix (32-27) 4-1 after three innings of play, but St. Catharine battled back with four runs in the sixth and added two key insurance runs in the ninth en route to the 7-4 win.
St. Catharine got on the board first with a run in the third inning. Evan Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) opened the frame with a single and three batters later, Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) legged out an infield single to score Smith giving the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
The Phoenix responded with four runs in the bottom half off St. Catharine starter, Joan Pena (New York, N.Y.). Pena (7-4) picked up the win after his offense helped him out late in the game. The right-hander fanned five in six innings allowing four runs on six hits.
After trailing 4-1 entering the sixth, the St. Catharine offense got back on track with four runs on three hits and one key error by the Cumberland defense. Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) and Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) both walked to open the inning.
A wild pitch moved the runners up a base and Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) hit a sac fly to score Quinones. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) the ripped a single to score Lollio and Will Broady (Greenville, Ky.) was called upon as a courtesy runner.
Evan Smith kept the inning alive with a double to move Broady to third. After a walk to load the bases, Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) legged out an infield single to score Broady. Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) gave the Patriots a 5-4 lead when he later scored on an error.
Pena came out to pitch the sixth, but was pulled for Joseph Martin (Fort Thomas, Ky.). The freshman tossed one inning and didn’t allow a hit. Martin was then pulled for Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) who started the eighth inning.
The right-hander allowed runners to reach second and third in the eighth, but was able to get out of the inning unscathed. The Patriot offense scored two key insurance runs in the ninth while McCoy fanned the side in the bottom half to seal the win and his tenth save of the season.
In that ninth inning, Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) scored on a wild pitch after being intentionally walked earlier in the inning. Tyler Devine also ripped a single to score Hector Quinones – who earlier reached on a fielder’s choice.
Game 2: St. Catharine 3, Lindsey Wilson 12
After getting a win over Cumberland, the Patriots had to turn around and play Lindsey Wilson – who lost to Campbellsville (Ky.) earlier in the day in the winner’s bracket finals. The Blue Raiders (37-21) scored early and often en route to the 12-3 win.
Lindsey Wilson jumped on St. Catharine starter, Marvin Galarza (Arecibo, PR) from the get go. Galarza (7-3) allowed six runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Blue Raiders scored two runs in the first inning and added four more in the second to take a 6-0 lead after two complete. With one out in the second, Galarza was pulled for Joseph Martin. Martin pitched 2.1 inning and allowed four runs on four hits.
Martin was able to pitch into the fourth inning where Lindsey Wilson scored four more runs, but was pulled with two outs and James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) entered the game from the bullpen. Davenport allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The St. Catharine offense finally got on the board in the fifth inning with a run on two hits. Drew Kissel opened the inning with a double and Will Broady entered as a courtesy runner. Three batters later, Reid Battles reached on a fielder’s choice to score Broady from third.
Lindsey Wilson answered with a run in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 12-1 after six complete. Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) came on with one out in the sixth and scattered two hits in 2.2 innings of work on the mound.
The St. Catharine offense didn’t quit facing the deficit as the scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to make the final score 12-3.
Then in the ninth inning, an error and back-to-back singles by Cody Kollenberg (Peewee Valley, Ky.) and Josh Wenning loaded the bases with one out. Bohorquez then hit a sac fly to score the game’s final run and make the score 12-3.
