Moore goes for 25 in win over Mighty Oaks on Senior Night

 The lone senior on the St. Catharine women’s basketball team (8-20), Cora Moore was honored before she played her final game in Lourdes Hall on Tuesday night.

Moore celebrated her senior night by going for a season-high 25 points in her team’s 76-70 victory over Oakland City (Ind.). The Louisville, Kentucky native finished the night shooting 8-for-16 from the field including 6-of-13 from long range.

Moore wasn’t the only Patriot to notch double-figures against the Mighty Oaks (10-12). Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Ft. Myers, Fla.) joined her teammate finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Kayla Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) added 14.

The Patriots got off to a hot start jumping to a 6-0 lead just three minutes into the game. They led by as many as seven in the opening stanza as they led 15-11 at the end of the opening frame.

A triple by Kayla Wilson pushed the lead to double-digits for the first time at 25-15. Oakland City cut the lead down to seven, but Moore hit back-to-back 3’s in a 9-0 run to push the lead to 16. Moore hit another trey before the halftime buzzer making the lead 41-26 at the break.

Right out of the break, Sasha Ruiz-Lopez nailed a triple to expand the lead to its largest of the game at 44-26. The Patriots led by double-digits throughout period, but the Mighty Oaks closed the quarter on a 10-2 run cutting the lead to seven, 58-51, heading to the fourth quarter.

The Patriots answered the run by the Mighty Oaks when Moore nailed a three as the lead ballooned back to double-digits at 63-51 to open the fourth quarter. Oakland City cut the lead to three at 68-65, but Moore answered the bell again with another triple to seal the 76-70.

Neither team had an exceptional night shooting the ball, but the Patriots were a touch better. They shot 43 percent (27-63) for the game, whereas Oakland City shot 39 percent (28-72). The difference was the charity stripe where St. Catharine 14-for-23, while OCU hit 7-of-15.

St. Catharine will now begin preparation for the postseason where they will take on Shawnee State (Ohio) in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference women’s basketball that takes place March 3rd-6th at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Kentucky.
