St. Catharine, Ky. — One day after splitting with Madonna (Mich.) on Saturday, the Patriot baseball team (11-6) got the same result on Sunday afternoon at Edelen-Haydon Field. The Crusaders (4-3) won the opener 10-6, but the Patriots battled back winning the second 10-7.
Both teams entered the four-game series receiving votes in the opening preseason poll and after getting a split on both Saturday and Sunday, both teams leave the week with two wins and two loses.
Game 1: St. Catharine 6, Madonna 10
After the Patriots scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings tying the game up at six the Crusaders scored four runs in the seventh to come away with the 10-6 win.
Junior right-hander, Marvin Galarza (New York, N.Y.) started the game allowing six runs – four earned – on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) took the loss allowing four unearned runs on two hits in the seventh.
The Crusaders scored three in the second and one in the third inning taking a 4-0 lead, but the Patriots started to chip away at the lead with a run in the third when Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) tallied an RBI single.
St. Catharine scored another in the fourth when Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) reached on a bases loaded walk. Madonna scored two more in the sixth, but the Patriots answered right back thanks to a two-run single by Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, Calif.).
Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) tied the game up in the sixth when he roped a double down the left field line scoring two. St. Catharine was poised for a big inning after having runners at second and third with none out, but the Crusaders worked the way out of the jam.
Madonna then scored four in the seventh to seal the 10-6 win. Quinones and Arce each tallied two RBI’s, while Wenning and Bohorquez collected one RBI each.
Game 2: St. Catharine 10, Madonna 7
The Patriots got on the board first with four runs on two hits in the first inning. Quinones reached on a walk and later scored on a wild pitch. After a double and two walks to load the bases, Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, Ky.) cleared the bases with a three-run double to deep center.
Madonna answered with a six run second inning, but St. Catharine added two in the bottom half of the inning thanks to Alfredo Bohorquez. Bohorquez turned on a 2-0 pitch and watched it sail over the right-field fence for two-run home run tying the game a six apiece.
After each team scored single runs in the third inning, the game was tied a 7-7. From that point on the duo of Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) took over.
Lindsay picked up the win allowing just one hit in two innings, while McCoy collected his third save of the year pitching the final two innings allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
The Patriots took the lead in the fifth with two runs on three hits. Nicco Lollio (Brownstown, Mich.) led off with a single and later scored on a single by Devine. Devine came around to score on a triple by Reid Battles (Denton, Texas).
St. Catharine added an insurance run in the sixth on a sac fly by Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) as McCoy nailed down the win in the seventh.
Devine led the way at the plate going 3-for-3 with five RBI’s, while Bohorquez collected two hits and two RBI’s with two runs scored. Lollio added a 2-for-2 day with three runs scored as Cespedes and Battles drove in one run each.
