Patriots ready for first swimming season

Mike Carey will start the first St. Catharine College swimming team season with a meet November 12th. But even with that inaugural event looming, Carey is looking toward the future for the Patriot swimmers.

“I have had some success (recruiting) but I ran into some things I didn’t expect,” said Carey. “We lost some kids due to us being a new program. It is easier to show kids an established program. But I am by no means looking past this year because we will have some very good swimmers.”

One of Carey’s first signees traveled over quite a bit of water to join the first team at St. Catharine. Deveraux Bender arrived on campus this week from South Africa. He will be joined by three other swimmers on the men’s team including Jacob Williams and Will carter from Indiana and Austin Howard from Marion County (Ky.) High School.

As of now, Laura Edelen from Boyle County (Ky.) High School is the only swimmer on the women’s team.

“We can build on this,” added Carey. “I didn’t realize the potential of international students so that is something I will pursue for next year.”

Carey added that if there are any current female students at St. Catharine who would like to swim this year should contact him at or at 270 465-1872.
